UCI Applied Innovation is the front door for business collaboration.
The institute was created as a resource for entrepreneurs (combing event, office, and meeting spaces under one roof) to connect UC Irvine research and innovation with the Orange County business ecosystem. Its goal is to cultivate an innovation district in Orange County.
I joined the UCI Applied Innovation team in October 2015, a week after its grand opening. I was hired as a general intern but soon found my specialization as a marketing and communications intern.
The startup culture teaches you the importance of tenacity, personal growth, and making an impact. I wore multiple hats as an intern such as a receptionist, social media marketer, event assistant, photographer, account executive, newsletter writer, and copy-editor (just as you would if you were at a startup). By performing these roles, I obtained new talents while augmenting my communications, marketing, and social media skills.
Overall, I learned that you can make a valuable difference at your workplace even if you are an intern. I had the opportunity to directly shape UCI Applied Innovation’s story.
