One of my main tasks as an intern was writing and editing the Cove’s monthly newsletter, “Cove Currents”.
The publication’s purpose is to inform the public about the events happening at the UCI Applied Innovation space (“The Cove”) and the people who shape the entrepreneurial community of Orange County.
I was one of the founding members of the newsletter (and even came up with its title “Cove Currents”) back in October 2015. Since then, it has grown into an important document that is published physically as a magazine and electronically as an email newsletter. Each month, the newsletter reaches the mailboxes of over 500+ individuals and over 100+ physical copies are distributed around the Institute and relevant UC Irvine departments. As the intern with writing and journalism experience, I led the editorial team to ensure that the stories were compelling and accurate; the articles were within brand guidelines and relevant to the entrepreneurial audience; maintained the brand voice; and included original reporting.
My main beat was writing the startup feature on entrepreneurs in the Cove Share program or the Cove Resident (Tenant) program. I interviewed entrepreneurs, developed a story, and wrote about them for the newsletter. While these entrepreneurs were assigned to me, I developed the story angle and structure by myself. I have experience interviewing subjects through a tape recorder format (aka my phone) as well as on camera. Near the end of my internship, I was assigned to write other sections such as the “Past Tides” (event recaps) as well.
Along with writing, I was the main intern copy-editor. I read and revised each article in the newsletter for clarity and structure. Especially as the other interns had less writing/editing experience, I helped them figure out leads and story angles, suggested ways to make the story more compelling (add details!!!), revised graphs and stories, and made sure that their works fit in with the brand voice. I even conducted interviews with them until they were able to stand up on their own.
